Beijing 2022: Design of the Winter Olympics

Beijing 2022 looks set to welcome the world of winter sports while the Olympics can remind us of the 2008 Games. When the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics began in February, the Chinese capital became the first city in history to host both the summer and winter games.

Like most Olympics, not everything has gone smoothly for Beijing. While the pandemic has not delayed the games like it did for Tokyo in 2020, there will once again be limited spectators. In addition, there have also been political discussions over the host country. Several countries such as the UK and the US have pointed out diplomatic boycotts of the Olympic Games in light of China's history of human rights abuses.

It is perhaps not surprising that many visual elements of these games - from the torch to the panda mascot - are reminiscent of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, with a focus on Olympic history being made.

Venues built for the city's 2008 games will also be reused, although new venues have been created: a speed skating oval and a snowboard stadium. The design also attempts to move things forward, embracing not only China's culture but also the growing diversity of winter sports.
